Curiosity.
People are infinitely curious.
No matter how many signs they have on their doors, ‘no soliciting’, ‘no agents, pedlers or salespeople’, ‘I dont talk to strangers, NO door to door sales people please’, etc. etc. They still answer the door. Still.
Well, for the most part anyway.
But anyway. They answer the door. Then they get mad at you while they’re answering the door!
Curiosity. We can’t abide with not knowing. We have to know. And they say curiosity killed the cat. I don’t think cats have anything on us.
Side note: I do have a tendency to get rather grumpy when I know people are inside the house and don’t answer the door. It’s rather rude, as far as I’m concerned. But, if the alternative is you getting mad and being a…twit, then please, don’t answer the door. For those who answer just because they want to start something, or feel the need to take your day out on someone, I pretty much despise people like you. There is no reason to turn your nose up at me, or to treat me badly. I’m doing my job. And I don’t appreciate being the proverbial whipping boy (girl, although I never heard it put that way).
But there is, as there always has been, and always will be, those type of people. Like the latest complaint we got (actually, the only one concerning me directly). I went to a house that was already licensed by mistake, and I left a notice. I felt bad, because I try not to do that. But anyway, I’m human, I make mistakes, it happens. Shouldn’t have been a big deal since all I did was leave a notice.
Now, the title of the notice is ‘Friendly Reminder’. It gives the date for which their pet has to be licensed, the hours of the places where they can get the license, and the reminder that if they don’t license there is an $80.00 fine. If there are any questions, then they can contact the main by-law officer. Her name an number are on the bottom. Plus the form. That is it.
Well, there was a complaint from this person. They felt that the letter was ‘threatening’, among other things. Threatening. I’m sorry, but are you threatened when you see the signs on the road warning that there are fines for speeding? Or that fines are increased when there are construction workers present? Is that, threatening?
Cause it’s like, the same thing. You don’t follow the rules, there are consequences. If it wasn’t there you’d be asking ‘or what?’
There were also notes about how it’s a waste to hire a student for the summer, how they didn’t think it was an appropriate way to remind people to license, etc.
I’m sorry, but there is only ONE student hired for this job. And no student has ever actually covered the whole town before, meaning it’s a pretty big job. Yet there are multiple students hired for a bunch of other jobs around town that do a lot less work then this position requires. But either way, I don’t consider it a waste. Hiring students is more like an investment. You hire us so that we can pay for our education, so that we can get good jobs, give back to society instead of costing money. It’s just a productive circle.
As for how to remind people, do you have a better idea? Because if not, you really don’t have a right to say anything now do you.
Oh sorry, that’s right. You wanted us to CALL the whole town. Are you kidding me? Call. The whole town. Be my guest, but I much prefer this method. Plus, you can’t tell through a ringing phone if the person has a cat or dog. Being at a persons house is much better. And not everyone has an answering machine, so I’d have to keep calling and calling until I talked to someone. That would be so much more irritating, I can guarantee that.
They put adds in the paper. They put signs up around business. And still, people don’t license. So, hence the summer student going door to door.
And I’ll thank you very much for trying to get rid of my job.
I love the job. The people don’t like me, but I love the job.
